Issa Souju Memorial House

Issa as a poet traveling all over the country, had often stopped by Nagareyama where Misaemon Akiyama, a friend of Issa was brewing mirin, Japanese cooking sake. The house Issa used to stay during his visit back in 19th century was renovated as a public archive center along with restored garden.
Referring photographs taken during Meiji period, the garden project was carried on by effectively resorting existing elements such as steppingstones, arranged rocks, and stone artifacts scattered all over the garden, and minimizing to bring in new materials. The garden contents Karesansui (dry landscape garden) with white sands as a front garden to bring in natural light into the house, meantime, main trees at the center of background were planted with dense planting around. Newly paved approach was intentionally designed in modern manner with Kouetsuji styled bamboo fence.
